On December 29, 2001, one of the greatest singers of all time in Brazilian music left the scene. Prematurely, Cássia Eller left us at just 39 years old, with many musical gems echoing on the radio and the potential to have released many more hits.

But what was the cause of Cássia Eller’s death? According to the final report from the IML (Legal Medical Institute), the artist died of a heart attack followed by cardiac arrests. Histopathological exams revealed that the singer had heart problems, such as mild coronary sclerosis (beginning of fat thrombus formation) and myocardial fibrosis (scars resulting from other pre-existing injuries).

No drug or alcohol residues were found through toxicological exams, meaning it is false information that the singer died of an overdose, a piece of fake news shared even today on social media, as well as in comments on a viral post on WePlay’s Instagram profile.

A Year of Success

The year 2001 was remarkable for Cássia Eller’s fans, both positively and negatively. The first half of that year brought us stunning performances by the singer, the first at Rock In Rio, considered one of the greatest shows in Brazilian music history. She wowed the audience in the middle of a hot afternoon with unique versions of Brazilian classics, brought hits like "O Segundo Sol" and "Malandragem," and delivered a visceral interpretation of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by the American band Nirvana.

The second highlight for Cássia in 2001 was the MTV Unplugged, released in May of that year. The album sold over 1 million copies and made it into the top 10 best-selling albums of the year. From May to December, the artist performed more than 100 shows across Brazil. Sadly, the year ended with her passing, but we are fortunate to have had such a genuine talent as Cássia Eller in our country.
